Did you know that the devil’s primary battleground is your mind? That is right – thoughts. Everything begins with a thought.
I remember asking an older member of my previous church how he and his wife stayed pure before marriage. He said, “John, sex begins in the mind. If you control your thoughts, you control your life.” Wow.
Inventions begin with a thought – ideas about how to do something new, or better.
Ministries begin with a thought – how can I help people?
All sin begins with a thought – I want to do this or that.
Your relationship with Jesus begins with a thought – I need God, and so He leads you to His Son.
Therefore, Satan attacks your mind. That is why when Paul was talking to us about spiritual warfare, he said this:
“And take the helmet of salvation…” Ephesians 6:17
No solider goes onto the battlefield without his or her helmet on. Neither should you!
Satan cannot read your mind or get inside your head – unless you invite him in – but he can certainly plant thoughts into your mind.
This is what he did with Eve in the Garden. He planted the seed of disobedience to God. It all began with a thought, an idea – “Did God say?”.
That is why the Bible also says this:
“We fight with weapons that are different from those the world uses. Our weapons have power from God that can destroy the enemy’s strong places. We destroy people’s arguments and every proud thing that raises itself against the knowledge of God. We capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 NCV
I was speaking with a friend today who received a letter from someone just annihilating their character. They used poisonous words, saying awful things about them. I knew they were not true because I know the person. But my friend really had to battle for the truth. When I heard what was being said my initial thought was, “That is the devil speaking through one person to another.”
In spiritual warfare, it is critical that you only listen to what Jesus is saying to you.
This is what it means to, “Put on the helmet of salvation.”
Jesus speaks to you primarily through the Bible and by His Spirit by planting God-thoughts into your mind, either directly or through other people.
What is Jesus saying to you right now?
Are you believing things about yourself, about God, about your past, present or future, that Jesus is not saying?
If so, what are you going to do about it?
