So many people do not sleep well, and this wreaks havoc on their minds, emotions, and bodies. But there is a sure remedy.
“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.” Psalm 127:1-2
The word “vain” shows up three times in just two verses and it means “empty, useless, for nothing”.
What are the three areas we can work extremely hard on and come up empty?
1. Building something – whether it is your marriage, family, business, ministry, or our country… whatever it is, if the Lord is not in it, you can work hard and produce little.
2. Guarding something – whether it is your home, loved ones, your actual city, state or nation, if the Lord’s protective hand is not over these areas, there will be nothing we can do to stop the enemy from bringing destruction.
3. Providing something – Whether it is for yourself, family, company, ministry, or our country… if the Lord is not our source, we will struggle to make ends meet, or die trying.
So, what is the good news? God helps build, protects, provides for, and gives sleep to those who trust Him. In fact, while you are sleeping, He is still working, protecting, and providing, because He never sleeps. This happens on a national level as well:
“Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” Psalm 121:4
It is not a secret that stress is one of the main causes of poor sleep. When your mind cannot shut off, your body cannot calm down.
“Peace of mind means a healthy body…” Proverbs 14:30 NCV
So how can you have a peaceful mind? By inviting God into every aspect of your life, fully submitting your life to Him, and trusting in His care for you.
Remember who He gives sleep to – His beloved. That’s you.
With the election happening tomorrow, and what may follow, this is a great opportunity to trust God. If you can sleep peacefully tonight, that will be a good sign that you are trusting that God is in control!
I know this may sound simplistic, but that is because it truly is simple. Dependency. Trust. Faith. These are the sources of sweet sleep.
