When I work-out I put on my exercise shorts, t-shirt, and running shoes. Now, how silly would it be if I put on my dress shoes? And how effective would that be? We all have different shoes for differing purposes.
Did you know when you engage in spiritual warfare, God has given you a very special pair of shoes? Do you know what they are? Ephesians 6:15 tells us.
“For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.” Ephesians 5:16 NLT
You need to put on your gospel shoes!
How do your gospel shoes help you in battle? They make peace between us and God, and one another. Satan’s goal, on the other hand, is to create division and chaos between us and God, and one another, to rip us apart. This is how churches, families, and even nations are destroyed. It is all about relationships, and this war is raging right now!
Relationships are hard, aren’t they? We are selfish to the core which is why we must continually battle against our own self-centered desires. But then when you add Satan’s attacks, it goes to a whole other level, a supernatural level. That is why the gospel shoes are the only shoes that are effective in a spiritual battle. In fact, the Bible says that the gospel is literally the “power of God”!
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” Romans 1:16
One of the things that make the gospel shoes so effective is how they can help you “dig in” and hold your ground when you are tempted or tested. And they can enable you to gain ground when you are advancing – that is, sharing the good news.
The shoes that Roman soldiers wore, which is where Paul is drawing his analogy from, had spikes on the bottom for the purpose of digging into the ground when they needed to hold their ground or to advance. Did you know that? They could also be used to step on the enemy’s neck. Remind of you of something Jesus said?
“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” Luke 10:19 NIV
That is why we need to put on our gospel shoes every morning. We need to dig in and fight for our relationships with one another, with God, and for the lost. We need to put our foot on Satan’s neck. This is how we will bring peace. This is how we will win!
Yesterday one of my kids hurt me with their words. I was wounded. I was offended. Thoughts ran through my head like, “Fine, I just won’t be the parent you need me to be then! Go ahead and figure out life by yourself, and good luck!” Have you ever felt that way in a relationship? Well, fortunately, he came to me this morning and apologized. I still didn’t want to forgive, but I knew I needed to. We talked, forgave, hugged, and moved on. That’s the gospel. And Satan cannot win when you have on your gospel shoes!
Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.” Matthew 5:9
God is the God of peace. You are His child of peace. And you will win your spiritual battles when you are wearing the right shoes.
Put on your gospel shoes today and win!
