Why is truth so important? Well, if we relate it to other things we will see why. For instance, if you are laying a tile floor in your kitchen, if the first tile is not “true”, the rest of the tiles will not line up properly. Or if you are building a brick wall, if the first brick in the wall is not “true”, the other bricks will not be able to support the weight of the wall. It will eventually collapse.

You cannot build a life, a marriage, a friendship, a business partnership, or anything else in life on a lie. If you want to build something that will last the test of time it has to be built on truth.

Therefore, our world is broken, and especially our political system right now. We have bought into a philosophy called, “Relative Truth”. That is, what is true for me may not be true for you. We all have our own truth.

This is foolishness.

What did Jesus say about truth?

“Set them apart by your truth. Your Word is truth.” John 17:17

Jesus flat out said that God’s Word is THE truth. And that His Word sets us apart.

To be set apart is to take one thing out of a pile of things and set it apart for a special purpose.

So, what is Jesus saying we are to be separated out of? Well, He told us in the previous verse:

Jesus said, “They are not of this world just as I am not of this world.” John 17:16

We are set apart from the world so that we can help save the world!

We are separated from values, philosophies, and norms of any culture that do not line up with Jesus’ kingdom culture.

So how do we know what His kingdom culture consists of? His truth!

Satan knows this which is why the very thing he challenged in the Garden of Eden with Eve, and he is still challenging today, is God’s Word.

“Now the serpent was craftier than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the garden”’?” Genesis 3:1 NIV

That is not what God said.

Paul understood this as well which is why he tells us in Ephesian 6:14 that the very first piece of God’s armor that we are to put on if we want to be successful in spiritual warfare is His truth!

“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle, you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.” Ephesians 6:10-14 NLT

John says it this way:
“I have written to you who are young in the faith because you are strong. God’s word lives in your hearts, and you have won your battle with the evil one.” 1 John 2:14 NLT

If you are not in the Word, the Word will not be in you, and you will not win.

BUT, if you stay in the Word of God, you will know the truth, “… and the truth will make you free!” John 8:32
